Who are The Mandalorians?

Hailing from the planet Mandalore, Mandalorians were of the warrior clan. Historically, they were renowned for their combat skills and their honor, along with their dynamic allegiances. Their incredible combat skills, their renowned armor, as well as their ability to efficiently operate as bounty hunters and mercenaries set them apart.

It is well-known that during several instances, the Mandalorians waged wars against the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic. However, when Tarre Vizsla – a Mandalorian – became a member of the Jedi Order as a child, peace engulfed the two groups for a short period. It is worth noting that the Darksaber was created by Tarre Vizsla and integrates a black blade that resembles no other saber in the galaxy. House Vizsla was founded by Tarre before becoming Mandalore’s leader. Thus, the Darksaber would go on to become a symbol signifying leadership to the people of Mandalore.

Once Tarre Vizsla passed away, the Darksaber was stolen from the Jedi Temple by the members of his house. Their objective was to unify the people of Mandalore and this event initiated their dispute with the Jedi Order yet again. This culminated in a serious battle, transforming substantial parts of Mandalore into areas devoid of life. Following this incident, the Mandalorians refrained from waging wars against the Republic and instead, agreed to various treaties to maintain peace. However, Mandalorians are warrior clans, and thus, infighting would soon emerge as a dire problem.

For the next 1000 years, the Mandalorian people would confront issues such as religious differences, political conflicts, civil wars, imperial rule, and other parameters that would divide them. During the Great Purge of Mandalore, the Empire killed millions of Mandalorians, which led to their lowest point in all of history. However, these honorable people continued to rely on their will and resolve to tackle life.

Notable Darksaber Users
As per the norms of the Mandalorian people, only a person possessing the Darksaber can claim Mandalore. To possess the Darksaber, an individual must battle with and defeat the prior owner of this coveted weapon. The ancient Darksaber was possessed by many people over the years. The only thing that varied was their intentions.

About 1000 years before the Clone Wars, Tarre Vizsla created the Darksaber. He was also the first-ever Mandalorian to join the Jedi Order. After founding House Vizsla, he was eventually pronounced the leader of Mandalore. Following his demise, the Jedi Temple stored his saber. However, Members of House Vizsla stole it and it was then passed on from generation to generation by Pre Vizsla’s ancestors.

During the Clone Wars, it was Pre Vizsla (Pre Vizsla’s ancestor) who possessed the Darksaber. He spearheaded Death Watch, which was a terrorist group comprising of Mandalorian people, during a period when Mandalorians had undertaken a pacifist stance.
The object of Death Watch was to overthrow Mandalore’s government along with Duchess Satine to reaffirm the warrior roots of the planet. Vizsla was not only ambitious but also extremely brutal. Thus, he partnered with various forces, such as Sith Lord Maul, intending to fulfil his ambitions. Once he overthrew the government, he also betrayed Maul and became the self-proclaimed prime minister. However, this Mandalorian warrior would soon be defeated by Maul in a duel and the latter would go on to claim the throne.

As a renegade Sith Lord, Maul was not a Mandalorian. Yet, he received the Darksaber upon defeating Pre Vizsla. In addition to leading Mandalore, he was also the leader of Death Watch.
He puppeteered Almec who was the Prime Minister during that period. However, Darth Sidious would soon confront him, convinced that he was a threat. Despite battling the Sith lord with his Darksaber, he would not emerge victorious. Sith Maul captured him following his victory and Maul was freed by his followers before he started reigning yet again. Ahsoka Tano and the Grand Army of the Republic would eventually overthrow Maul for good.

One more key character in the world of the Mandalorians was Bo-Katan Kryze. She was the sister of Satine – Mandalore’s leader. While Satine promoted pacifist leanings, Bo-Katan was more conservative in her beliefs. Thus, it was unsurprising that she eventually became a part of Death Watch, which was spearheaded by Pre Vizsla. Ideological differences would cause the former to leave the group after Maul takes over. Upon learning about the Republic Forces’ fight against Death Watch, Bo-Katan would partner up with them. Following this battle, Mandalore would be led by Lady Kryze until the Empire’s rise. Her refusal to support Emperor Palpatine led to her loss of that eminent position.

One more civil war began among the residents of Mandalore when it was occupied by the Empire. Lady Kryze encountered Sabine Wren during this war and learned that the latter possessed the Darksaber. Sabine offered it to Bo-Katan, convinced that she was the right person to wield it. Bo-Katan would rule for a very short period, however, since she would lose the saber to Moff Gideon.

Once the Empire fell, Bo-Katan decided to claim the Darksaber yet again and bring her people together. This is when she met Din Djarin – another Mandalorian – and hired him to work with her on a mission against Gideon. However, when Djarin would defeat the ex-Imperial, he would accidentally become the possessor of the Darksaber. When Bo-Katan saved Djarin from a cyborg, he returned the Darksaber to her. With the Darksaber in her possession, Bo-Katan would begin rebuilding her home.

A young Mandalorian warrior as well as an expert in explosives, Sabine Wren was of the Clan Wren and a member of House Vizsla. She possessed the Darksaber for a short period, which she obtained on the planet Dathomir while on a mission aligning with the objectives of the Rebel Alliance. Sabine was trained to use the Darksaber by Jedi Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger. She carried the Darksaber with her when extending support to the other Mandalorians, before passing it on to Bo-Katan.
Representing an entirely different sect of Mandalorians, Din Djarin was extremely religious and was compliant with his creed. When he was committed to the objective of protecting Grogu – a Force-sensitive child – he found himself amid conflict and introspection. Upon encountering Lady Bo-Katan Kyrze, Djarin realized that both of them wanted to defeat Moff Gideon. Grogu was kidnapped by the warlord, and Djarin and Kyrze collaborated on his rescue mission. Upon rescuing Grogu, Djarin also defeated and captured Gideon, becoming the possessor of the Darksaber.

Amidst Mandalore’s ruins, a cyborg captured Djarin, and Bo-Katin rescued him this time. Grateful to be saved, Djarin passed on the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, calling her the rightful owner.
